Next year Brugge Centraal will join the celebration of 500 years of carillon. It will be celebrated with a carillon weekend on 9th and 10th October.
On Sunday 10th October 2010 a carillon festival will be planned in which a.o. a number of carillon duets will be invited to play four-handed.
On Saturday 9th October 2010 there will be a world’s first performance in Bruges: referring to the Great Dictation of the Dutch Language Bruges Plus will organize the Great Music Dictation of Bruges in collaboration with its Music Academy.
Everyone who has ever attended a music theory class at a music academy knows the discipline: a piece of music is played in the music class and students try to write the music down in a music notebook. Similar to a text dictation the music is played completely and in pieces and this happens several times. For the Great Music Dictation the privacy of the classrooms of the music academy will be exchanged by the big Market Place of Bruges: there the impressive Bruges carillon will be the source of sound for what can develop into a real happening: a challenge for every musician and music lover!
Every music lover can take part. Also famous musicians from different music genres will sit down behind the desks to write down the dictation with as little mistakes as possible. For this event the Bruges Market Place will be made traffic-free to make is possible to listen to the dictation in optimal conditions. During the time between the dictation and the proclamation of the results there will be a lot of attractive animation concerning the carillon.
Bruges Central invited Giedrius Kuprevičius to compose and play the Great Music Dictation of Bruges. He is a famous composer from Kaunas (Lithuania) with an extensive oeuvre in symphonic music and chamber music. As carillonneur he is world famous for his concerts in combination with electronic music.
There will be played two dictations: a music dictation for youngster up to 15 and the Great Music Dictation for everyone over 15. Attractive prizes will be awarded to the best! Everybody will be able to subscribe and contest to win one of the prizes linked to this competition.
